FLASHBACK: ROY ROGERS and HIS INFLUENCE ON MY WORK

At an early age, my interest in drawing began and I illustrated; Cowboys, Indians & characters from the Sunday comics. It was in the sixth grade that a friend asked me if I had ever drawn a real person, I had not so I gave it a try. Some of the school tablets we used had western stars on them, mine had Roy Rogers, no better place to start than with the “King of The Cowboys”. Once, I took that step there was no turning back; drawing realism had just become my favorite subject. I was hooked.

Fast forward to 1994, I find myself with my son James, friend Sally and daughter Bridget, attending the 60th Anniversary of The Sons of the Pioneers in Tucson, Arizona  (the last gathering of the original members).  But for me there was a special reason for that trip. At the request of good friend, Fred Goodwin, I had just completed a drawing of Roy, Dale, Trigger and Bullet.  The drawing had been accepted to become a new print and Roy wanted to meet me.

The morning we were to meet, Roy and Dale came into a private room at the hotel restaurant. After breakfast, James graciously serving as my photographer , and I were escorted in to meet with Roy and Dale. Roy invited me to sit down beside him and I looked into his eyes, which appeared to be twinkling stars. Emotion overwhelmed me and tears started to run down my face. He was talking and I could not seem to get any words out of my mouth. I felt like my whole life was floating by.  I found myself sitting with the very first person I had ever drawn that ultimately put me on the road to my career as a portrait artist. It was all too surreal.  We had a nice visit and he told me how much he liked the art, saying “it was the best likeness he had ever seen of himself.”

On Saturday November 5, Roy Rogers would have been 100 years old. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet him. He gave us countless movies, television shows, songs and the Sons of the Pioneers.
Below, I share with you some of the art of Roy and the only three pictures to survive that day.

Thanks Roy, and “Happy Trails to You.”

TRIBUTE TO MY DEAR FRIEND MARIE D’ARC

The past thirty years of traveling to Memphis for Elvis Week, I have made some wonderful friends that I cherish dearly. In 1981 the first fans I met were Marie D’Arc ( 1948-2011) and her New Jersey friends which forged a lasting and wonderful  friendship.

Marie was a very talented artist and teacher. During one of our  Memphis trips, we were driving around the city and she looked up and commented on the beauty of the sky.  From her artistist perspective, she  commented to me on the reds, blues and ultramarines that lit up the evening sky. When I glanced up to the sky, I also saw its beauty, but my first thoughts were the shades of gray that are produced with the pencils of “H”, “F”, HB” and “3H” – we just laughed – two artists and their interpretation of the world around them.

When my second book of Elvis art was published, The Magic of Elvis, I wanted to incorporate some of my poetry with a select few of the drawings. I enlisted Marie to create the calligraphy for these pieces. At first,  she was hesitant because she did not want to write on the artwork, but that was what I wanted her to do which she did beautifully. As we progressed, I received another phone call from Marie, she was upset because she was doing the calligraphy and had become emotional about the piece. She started to cry and her tears fell on the artwork. I told her not to worry, it would only add something special to the piece.

I have felt a profound loss with the passing of a good friend and talented artist. The memories of the fun we had is very comforting. Yearly trips to Memphis, family trips to Washington & New Jersey and having her in our home…are just, “memories pressed between the pages of my mind, memories sweetened through the ages just like wine……”

Here I share with you some of those memories.

ELVIS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

For the artist there are no boundaries but our own imagination. Artists have always used those things at hand to express visually that which could not be expressed verbally. With my art, I stride to create “Moments in Time”.  I want to continue to  grow by embracing all new avenues of creative possibilities.

Over the past ten years, I have been working on incorporating my fine art pencil drawings with computer design to create a fresh and unique look with my artwork. This has been a very interesting process and has given me a fresh way of viewing Elvis.

Here are three examples of my pencil art and the graphics that have been created from them. Which group of images do you like best? Vote below.

FLASHBACK: 1990 ELVIS CALENDER

I adore calendars. In 1990 while planning my upcoming annual art exhibit during Elvis Week, I decided to create a 1991 calendar. I had been producing the yearly limited edition Elvis Week T-shirt and thought a calendar would be something interesting to add to the show.

It started with August 1990 and went through July of 1991. There were eleven pages of Elvis drawings also included were drawings of; Marilyn Monroe, Ricky Nelson, Bobby Vee, Frankie Avalon, Fabian, Bobby Rydell,  Buddy Holly, Bobby Darin, Paul Anka, Pat Boone, BB King, Robert Johnson, Johnny Ray, Bo Diddley, Joe Turner, Bessie Smith, and one of Lisa-Marie and Elvis together, called “Generations”.

The calendar was an enormous success that summer with the fans which I was pleased because I enjoyed creating the calender for them.

WINNER: NAME THAT picture TITLE CONTEST

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the NAME THAT picture TITLE CONTEST. What a great job you did! Nearly 300 hundred entries were submitted which made my job of selecting one very difficult.

This morning it became clear to me while driving and listening to Argo on ELVIS Sirius. I stopped at a light waiting to turn and he put on “Promised Land”.  It hit me like a hammer as the art flashed in my head – that’s it, “The Promised Land”.  Congratulations to Laura Arthur for her suggestion, great job!

Again, thank you all for your participation; you did a great job coming up with some wonderful titles, even giving me ideas for other works of Elvis art.

NAME THAT picture TITLE CONTEST

After creating and naming thousands of Elvis images throughout the years, I’m interested in how you would title this piece of my original artwork.

Please submit your title in the comment section of this post by September 13  and we will choose the most interesting one. The winner will be chosen and notified on Sept 15, 2011 and will receive an 8″ x 10″ print of this artwork.

ARTIST RIDE: TRAVELS AND INSPIRATION IN SOUTH DAKOTA

Rolling out of Memphis this year with my son James, we headed west to South Dakota. The trip took us through portions of Arkansas, Missouri, across Iowa into South Dakota. We had a wonderful adventure filled with miles of beautiful scenery and interesting stops along the way.

The occasion for the trip was the annual Artist Ride which I had been invited to attend. The Artist Ride, began in 1984 as an actual trail ride. Dan Deuter, Lavon Shearer, and Dale Lewis encouraged the participants to dress in period costume. The photography sessions became longer and longer until in 1987, it was held at the Shearer ranch on the Cheyenne River (the longest river in North America that flows north) 20 miles north of Wall Drug Store and the Badlands National Park.

The Artist Ride is by invitation only. Artists can gather scrap of mountain men, cowboys & longhorns, US cavalry, Indians, stage coaches, wagons, and almost anything from the 19th century American frontier you can imagine.

Having never participated in the Artists Ride  I did not know what to expect. Along the way, we posted photos on Facebook. Now that I am home and have had time to go through all of the photographs we took, I would like to share a few with you.

We covered 3600 miles and had an exciting time and hopefully we can do it again next year.
